Wander Gene — Is it in your DNA?

The "wander gene" refers to
a variant of the DRD4 gene (specifically the 7R allele), linked to novelty-seeking and exploration, often called the "adventure gene," which became more common as human populations migrated out of Africa, suggesting a genetic component to wanderlust and risk-taking. While it doesn't dictate behavior, this gene variant affects dopamine receptors, potentially increasing the reward from new experiences.  

Its Connection to Wanderlust:
  • Migration: The 7R variant appeared about 50,000 years ago and spread rapidly in populations that traveled further from Africa, suggesting it favored explorers.
  • Exploration: People with this gene are more likely to be curious, take risks, and have a strong desire for new experiences. 
In essence, the "wander gene" is a genetic predisposition for novelty-seeking that played a role in human dispersal and continues to influence our desire for adventure.
