The Wander Gene brand origin story — a travel lifestyle brand born from passion, purpose, and the entrepreneurial spirit

Wander Gene Story: From Kitchen Table to Travel Brand

I've always had that deep, restless pull to go. As long as I can remember, the horizon felt more like a call than a view. Europe trips in recent years turned that feeling into action—solo adventures, new streets, new stories every time.

Then, about 10 years ago, I learned about the DRD4-7R variant—the real "wanderlust gene," the one science says wires some of us to crave novelty, exploration, change. It wasn't just a quirky personality trait; it was in my DNA. That discovery felt like permission. I changed my Instagram handle to @thewandergene and kept chasing the next place.

Fast-forward to four months ago: I was playing around with my Cricut machine, experimenting with designs. I asked AI to generate a simple logo that captured the idea—"The Wander Gene."

First version of the logo

I cut it out, pressed it onto an old shirt to see how it would look first, and then committed to a new shirt.

First puff vinyl cut on my kitchen counter with my laptop and a Cricut machine...

First shirt! I loved it!

I made another and my sister and I wore it on out next outing. The reactions from strangers and friends? "That's so me." "Where can I get one?"

That tiny spark turned into a question I couldn't ignore: What if others want to wear their wander too?

I didn't wait for perfect conditions. I started, adjusted, and kept going.

In less than 90 days, an idea turned into first-edition merch, a live website, Shopify and Amazon approval, trademarks in progress, and a referral sale outside my immediate circle. Recently, I had a moment I didn't expect—a celebrity repost wearing my merch and sharing with me that she loves it.

No big launch. No noise. Just consistent steps forward.

Wander Gene is about movement—trying, refining, and letting things grow as they're meant to. This first edition marks the beginning, and I'm grateful for everyone who's been part of it so far.

The best part? It's not just about the shirts, hats, or hoodies. It's about claiming that gene out loud—wearing the proof that you're built for more horizons, more questions, more "what if I just go?" moments. Every order, every tag, every story shared reminds me we're all in this restless, beautiful club together.

If you've got your own version of "I didn't wait for perfect"—a trip you booked on impulse, a project you started messy, a life change you chased without a full plan—I'd love to hear it. Tag your progress pics (or your Wander Gene gear in the wild) @thewandergene, drop a comment below, or DM for custom ideas. Let's keep the movement going.

Grateful for the road so far, and excited for wherever it leads next.

Wander On!

Nicole
